Teresa’s take on San Antonio…
October 29th, 2009 - by Teresa

Well, howdy there, folks! It is true that Wylie and I went on an adventure last weekend for a bit of a celebration. Let me just start by saying that the trip was off to a great start 2 weeks before it even happened thanks to Priceline! I had never “named my own price” before, but seriously, we saved like $30+ per night! I hate to sound like a commercial for them, but sheesh! That was awesome!

The trip itself was also pretty great. San Antonio has a really wonderful downtown area–everything was close enough to walk to, and it seemed like there was a trolley running too–we, however, never had any cash on us, so we had to skip it…It really is interesting how easy it is to get along without any cash, and you never even notice it until you owe someone 5 bucks…Anyway…It was pretty much a perfect day on Saturday because the sun was shining and it was not too hot (though Wylie may disagree) and it was lovely. He already gave a pretty accurate description of the Alamo and the Institute of Texan Cultures. Wylie had to make due with my own dramatic reading of the brochure at the Alamo that had a brief description of the events that went down there…I thought I did a great job, what, with all my years in high school theater productions. It seems like they could charge people $2 and get a tour guide.

The Riverwalk area is really nice and pretty–I think we saw no less than 7 brides and grooms taking advantage of the photo opportunities. Maybe my favorite part about it were all the statues and one building had gothic style gargoyles and faces carved in that looked intricate and rad.

My favorite part of all, I think, was the Mercado area–where we were able to see some really unexpected Journey covers–and I had a terrific margarita. It was kind of like if you took Nogales out of Mexico–they had all kinds of things for sale–I had to literally rip the Luchador mask out of Wylie’s hand because, I mean, really, he would be too menacing in it.

And, the drive home was also lovely on Sunday. I am a sucker for a cave, and apparently Texas has over 5,000–I think there are 3 in between here and San Antonio, but I am glad that we picked the Cascade Cavern. First of all, there was a styrofoam dinosaur left over from when they filmed part of the movie Fatherhood there and a swimming pool entirely filled in with rocks and grass, but still with a ladder for getting in and out, and a tour guide who knew her shit but was totally cool with people taking bits of fossilized limestone home with them because “[they] just got bought by new owners, so they’ll re-do the walkways anyway.” (Not from inside the cave, just from outside….) It kind of had an eerie place-of-the-past feeling to it, and it made me wish I was a film student a little bit so that I could make the next big Blair-Witch-esque blockbuster there….

Also, on the way home I was able to finish the book I was reading–Change of Heart by Jodi Piccolt. It was good. I like the way she writes from several perspectives to tell the story, but I thought the love interest bit was a little over the top…Anyway, I just got a new book from the library–Kafka on the Shore (Haruki Murakami) that I have only just started. I am always looking for books to read, by the way, so suggestions are welcomed.

So, other than that things are good here in Texas. Busy as a bee at the counseling center as the semester moves past the mid-point and the students start to realize things aren’t going the way they’d wished/hoped/passively waited for. I continue to have a crush on my internship site and love every minute of it…even though I have to think really hard sometimes. Wylie and I have a few other adventures to look forward to in the next few weeks, and that’s always fun. I love me some anticipation…
